Ambassador of Setomaa (2012)

On either side of a disputed and un-ratified border between Estonia and Russia lies the land of the Seto people, Setomaa (meaning "Land of Wars" in the Seto language). Nowadays there are approximately 10 000 Setos left in the World.
Valli who has grown up in a proper Seto family in Pechorsky District has been living in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, for the last 40 years. According to her bloodline she is the fifth generation Seto folk singer. Besides her day-to-day work at Äripäev Publishing Valli continues to keep the traditions of singing and playing the garmon alive.
However, she is facing an identity crisis - preserving the Seto traditions living in the capital comes across as artificial and forced. It is her dream to organise a reunion of the whole family of her great-grandmother - the famous Seto singer Martina Iro. Valli wants to honour the old Seto customs and arrange a genuine commemoration ceremony in her home village.
