Sünopsis

The tragedy written by August Kitzberg is set at the beginning of 19th century, during the era of slavery, according to the author. One late winter night, the Tammaru family is waiting their father to come back home. He has left to witness the execution of a witch. He arrives home, wolves howling in the forest, and tells the family how the witch's little daughter Tiina has run away to the forest during the execution. There is a knock on the door and when they open it there is the lost girl. The Tammaru family adopts her. Tiina wins the heart of Margus, the son of the family, however the rest of the family is disapproving this. Stepdaughter Mari is jealous since she desires Margus herself. Dark-skinned Tiina and the fair village residents get into conflict when people start to tell stories about Tiina being a werewolf. Tiina faces seemingly unsurmountable obstacles and won't see any options to carry on with her life. Tiina escapes to the forest, then returns in order to invite Margus to go with her. Despite his love towards Tiina, Margus cannot leave his traditional way of living in the farm. His last words to Tiina are: "If we leave the parish, then we won't get into the parish register and who's going to marry us then?" Tiina's free spirit won't let her become a slave and she escapes the Tammaru farm for good.
