Andrey Sakharov (May 21, 1921–December 14, 1989) was Russian nuclear physicist, social activist and dissident. Since 1948, he participated in developing of thermonuclear weapons. In late 1950s, Sakharov started to worry about the consequences of his achievements and tried to avoid arms race while writing letters to the Soviet authorities. He was arrested in 1980 due to his protest against the Afghan War and he was sent to house arrest in Gorsky where he lived under the surveillance of Militia until 1986 when Mikhail Gorbachev let him free.
