Captain Fyodor Volkonogov, a well-respected and obedient USSR law enforcer, witnesses his peers being suspiciously questioned. Sensing his turn is approaching, he escapes and is soon on the run, hunted by his former colleagues. Vulnerable and hopeless, Fyodor comes to realize what he had been part of, and that repentance is the only way for him to escape the eternal torment of Hell. But time is running out and the manhunt is closing in on him...

The events of this parable take place in a city that resembles Leningrad (USSR) in 1938. This is a tense period of political persecutions and mass fear. The Captain of the Department of Internal Affairs Fyodor Volkonogov (32) specializes in obtaining self-incrimination from persons under investigation using special methods of force. But the moment comes for the repressive system to turn the eye on its own soldiers. Volkonogov’s direct supervisor commits suicide. Fyodor foresees his own arrest and flees, thus becoming “the enemy” hunted by the colleagues. Lucky to get regular clothes Captain is looking for the shelter ...

In front of the main gates of the Pskov-Caves Monastery there is a modest wooden St. Barbara Church where Father Jevgeni has served as a priest already for several decades. He baptizes, weds, blesses, remembers, hears confessions, calculates the congregation's money and manages the church. Jevgeni holds around two hundred funeral ceremonies a year. Death is one of the main characters in the documentary; however, another main subject of the film is life - the one lived by Jevgeni and the people who are connected to him and the church.
