Excavation of the 17th century glass factory in Hiiumaa island

Archaeological excavations near Hüti village in Hiiumaa island, Estonia.

It is historically known that near the village of Hüti in Hiiumaa, a Frenchman, Count Jakob De la Gardie, built a glass factory in 1628 which operated for 36 years. Today, archaeological xcavations are taking place there. Elderly geologist Evald Möls has reached the foundations of the furnace and chimney. Many young people, mostly girls, are participating in the excavations. Traces of works produced in the former glassworks are being found. Day by day, professor Maks Roosmaa witnesses new archaeological finds that originate from Estonia's oldest glassworks.
