One day, an accordionist Samuel appears on the doorstep of an old man Jacob. Jacob provides him with food and shelter, all the while letting him know of his hardships as a farmer. Samuel, seemingly without a worry, decides to help Jacob, but the old man shuns him and is growing colder by the minute. The accordionist begins to feel unwelcome and is ready to leave, when he realises Jacob's real grief and that he's losing his land to a small-town opportunist Toivo.
Samuel decides to stay and help Jacob anyway. The old man is glad.
However the next day Samuel is gone. Saddened by the sudden departure, he is then met with Toivo. The opportunist, now sporting a black eye, announces that he won't be taking away the land and that Jacob has indeed raised a decent son.
