Viktorija Cizova – an unemployed 47 years old woman from Karosta. At the moment she is
dropped out from her flat and lives at a friends place. Viktorija has been married and divorced
twice and is a mother of eight kids. Her two oldest daughters with their boyfriends also live in
Karosta. The oldest son is in a juvenile prison; the other five live with Viktorija.
Valera Cizovs – Viktorija’s son. He is the most active kid of the family and at the moment is
eight years old. Valera, as well as his younger brothers, often runs into arguments with other
local kids. He is the leader of the children storyline.
Max, Vitos, Angelina, Anna, Alla Cizovi ‐ Valera’s brothers and sisters. As they like to disturb
their mother, they always get into a trouble. They like to scream, sing, play, sometimes also
pray to God and fight against each other. Most of their time they spend together.
Other children – along with Cizovi’s kids they find themselves in similar family conditions. Same
time they all are distant from their family problems, living in own children world. Together they
visit the church – day center, which is the main meeting point besides the school. Through the
workers of the center a loving hand, care and consolation is given to the kids – qualities that in
most cases cannot be shared within the family and parents.
People of Karosta – the generation of Karosta that evolves similar destiny to Viktorija, as
presented in the film. As the children, also the inhabitants of Karosta meet in the local church
and day center at the family events.

This film examines social conditions surrounding community of Karosta ‐ a place that once used to be a Soviet military base, today has become a place for a constant struggle of survival.
“Children of Karosta” tells a story of Viktorija’s family, living in a former Soviet military base in Latvia – Karosta. The surrounding environment, its isolation and the national socio‐economic situation has put these people under the test of survival. After a loss of an apartment Viktorija and her eight children look for ways to escape the common destiny, surrounding Karosta community.
